ART STATEMENT

My art focuses on questioning the notion of identity. Identity is the way we perceive and express ourselves. Factors and conditions that an individual is born with, such as ethnic heritage, sex, or one's body, often play a role in defining one's identity. However, many aspects of a person's identity change throughout his or her life. People's experiences can alter how they see themselves or are perceived by others. Their identities also influence the decisions they make: individuals chose their ''tribe'' of people they relate to, or they don't, they align themselves with religious ideas, traditions or they refuse them, align themselves with political beliefs based on their identities or follow their own ideas. Some people need the constant presence of others to define themselves and cannot stand quiet spaces, others enjoy the time they have for themselves and have developed a deep inner world, that does not depend on others. Identity is a very broad theme to grow and a lifetime exploration of humanity.

My goal as an artist is to leave the viewer with the essence of the subject, a window into a specific world, nothing more. If it takes an entire painting to do that, so be it. If it takes just a small sketch, or a photograph. . . that’s fine too.  Over the past few years I’ve been working on simplifying and focusing with painting rather than other mediums I am also familiar with.

Simplification is not just a stylistic preference, it is a visual imperative. It is not a single idea imposed at one stage of a painting, but a way of seeing the world that is fostered at every stage. At every step, through conception, composition, color and even technique, the eye is bent upon this purpose.

Simplifying starts by exploring a limited palette of acrylic colors, that I will be using for complex glazes and flat colors.

Working with imaginary elements of dreams, symbolisms, intertwined with reality or life events, I give much importance to a solid and an almost architectural composition. I try to evoke a sense of strength, mass, body, as if those visions were iconic. Make them tangible.

I intend to play with the negative space, the scale of the elements, and the limitations of the canvas, create a visual rhythm, conducted by vertical, horizontal, and diagonals, play with balance and imbalances.

My texture is visual and emanates from the power of color itself. Solid, flat colors dialogue with the deep glazing work. At times the glazing atmospheric work dominates the scene, at other times the flatness takes over but there is always a dialogue between the two.

I like to play with perspective but the light and shadows are totally independent from logic and can have multiple sources. My line work can be continuous or broken, I see the lines as boundaries or a form of writing.

I use my work to express, explore and question ideas about identity and how we could define ourselves nowadays, with more authenticity. A pure visual space, that takes us to the essential, is not something easy to reach in a world that is surrounded by superficiality, sophistication, technology, greed, and materialism. The visual aesthetic I am creating here is also a journey in itself, a doorway opened to a different world I am inviting the viewer to pass.
